Who writes with Sturm und Drang any more. Well, it was a literary style composed of impetuosity, turmoil and torment. Sturm und Drang is a term referring to a short lived literary, musical and theatrical movement. Literally Storm and Drive, often translated as Storm and Urge, typically it is translated Storm and Stress. The term was coined after the name of a play which opened in 1777 in Leipzig, Germany, and some of it’s literary proponents included Goethe and Schiller.
Who are the writers of today that can compare? The greatest literary names always begin with Shakespeare of course, and probably Homer, though so few today appreciate the stories they told. Charles Dickens, Leo Tolstoy, Mark Twain, Anton Chekhov, Oscar Wilde, Edgar Allan Poe everyone has their favorites. We voted for Poe. Modern writers include C.S. Lewis, Hemingway, Faulkner, Steinbeck, Orwell, Tolkien, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Kurt Vonnegut.
A bunch of dead guys of course. What about our contemporaries? Those still filling the pages of books with satire, drama and fantasy today. Stephen King, J.K. Rowling, Salman Rushdie, John le Carre, and Ursula K. LeGuin; all members of the literary club.
